The Purpose of Life is to Live it..not to spend all of it searching for the purpose. Live Live Live like every second was your last.

Im reading this article from the New York Times Link and Im wondering what the heck is going on? Arent these the families of people who are fighting the wars that the government in the USA are pushing?

This is outrageous!

Sure buy more bombs and new technology to kill people but dont look after the very families that are putting their lives at risk in the pursuit of freedom.

Why not turf the President out of the Whitehouse and the many other politicians out of their homes in the name of saving money? This is so wrong! But just goes to show the real meaning of Politics.

P, I'm not quite sure what you're getting at.....what do you mean by not looking after families?

Base closures happen pretty regularly.  It's not a question of the military downsizing per se, it's more about re-shaping.  Instead of having 10,000 troops spread out over 4 bases, they close 2 and have 10,000 troops at 2 bases instead.  As far as I'm concerned, it's a better way to do things.  For example, the base I'm at is so short on security forces personnel that we're having to borrow from other bases in order to man all the posts and patrols.  If we had fewer bases but the same number of personnel, we woudn't have as much of a problem....does that make sense?

OK makes sense.. just as long as it isnt hurting you guys in the process.

I was going to explain it, but Dharma beat me to it.

However, it does affect the local economy of the area where the close based resided, and that is why it is such a political hot potato.  There are a lot of civilians who work on and around a base that will be losing their jobs upon its closure.

Yes, it does, which is why there are committees set up to argue for keeping the base open. It's not about the facilities or the local economy though...it's about the mission. If the government feels that the resources will be better utilized else where, the base will likely close regardless of the impact on the local area.

Granted, but that is where the politicians fail their duty. Instead of considering the mission first, they consider their political career first. They are moral cowards.

Just out of curiosity, how many of those base closings are purposed in "Red States" vs "Blue States"?

Here in NC, if it were not for the military, the economy wouls shrivel up and die...we have already lost textiles, and tobacco........

It should be about the facilities and the local economy. It should be about the community as a whole, not segregation of military and not, it should be how they all work together to form a community! How then can the non military families be seen as supportive of the military families when they arent included in what is going on? It is about community no? not us and them.
