The Purpose of Life is to Live it..not to spend all of it searching for the purpose. Live Live Live like every second was your last.

Well finally there is something that I agree with the Prime Minister John Howard and treasurer Peter Costello on.

This year for Christmas give your children Love.

I work at a major department store in Australia. The past couple of weeks have been really busy. Being a checkout operator I see what people are buying their families for Christmas. It seems to me that people are buying things just for the sake of buying. They seem to have an endless amount of credit to spend without any thought to having to pay it back in the near future.

But why do people buy so much stuff for their kids and families for Christmas? Is it because they truly need the gifts they are buying or are they spending this amount of money so that it can replace the love lost during the year and make up for it?

Im constantly amazed at work at the trolley loads of what seems to me as *crap* passing through. Why?

I was on the phone to my sister this morning and she was given a wish list to Santa by her two children one 9 and the other 11. She read it out to me. I was astounded at the items carefully thought out by my nephews. It was all computer games and expensive equipment that I would never have dreamt of asking for as a kid let alone now as an adult. What happened to the times when as a kid I was really excited to even get one present, sometimes something simple as a new tee shirt or soccer ball. Commercialism it seems has taken over the minds of the present generation of kids.

So maybe it is some good advice coming from our politicians here in Oz about what we really should be giving not only at Christmas time but all throughout the year... Love.

Phoenix...

I think parents and families nowadays are so...focused on work that Christmas is the one time of year they can "buy back" their kids respect and affection...you know?

If I have kids...I'm going to give them the best gift...my parents gave it to me...it's TIME... Take some time for those kids...you know?

That is pretty sad isnt it Marcie. Replacing the time lost with a whole heap of stuff I dont think does the trick.

The best present I was ever given, the present I got the most use out of of any present I have ever been given was..... a bunch of cardboard boxes. They had been used for moving. I was less than 5 years old. With a young fertile mind, these boxes became castles, caves, cubby holes, hats, slippery dips, whatever I felt like. I am truly grateful for the gift my parents gave me..the gift of a creative mind which they have fostered from day one.

It surely is sad that things are so commercialized, and it's true kids are a strange specie nowadays

Actually kids havent changed at all, and it's true the best gift parents can offer is love. I think some children perceive the gifts they get a sign of love from parents, but a lot of them need more signs of affection like cuddles or whatever.

Exactly right! seems some kids think that the more that is spent on them the more they are loved. I guess that is a part of the comercialist society though. The gifts I cherished the most were those handmade things that have been passed down.

Maybe they think Santa can afford it even if mum can't (especially if mum can't)

Yeah its so sad Trina.. I see it everyday at work at the moment.. I know people cant afford it.. they are putting so much on credit. They really feel like they have to do it though even though really they dont want to. It's a strange system we put ourselves in.
