The Australian Prime minister has just announced that we will be spending $450 million dollars on long range cruise missiles to maintain our regional supremacy in the Asia Pacific region. Hello??
Link
Umm why is it that we are allowed to have long range cruise missiles yet other countries are condemned for having them or told not to even think of having them?
What makes our Prime Minister anymore sane than others? I consider our Prime Minister just as insane as the rest of them.

Labor's defence spokesman, Kim Beazley, welcomed the purchase, but said it was critical Australia's neighbours were properly informed before the announcement was made
Well I guess that answers my question about what happens if the Liberal party loses this election
*sigh*

Once Australia loses the F-111, a long range, effective strike capability is a required to replace it. $450 million is cheap!
to maintain our regional supremacy in the Asia Pacific region.
... that's the general idea!

Hey Trina
I think it's really important that Australians really think about this coming election and who they vote for. The Greens are looking like a really good alternative, I wont be voting for liberals and I wont be voting for labor.
They both have short changed Australians and they both need a good wake up call. Even though I dont think the Greens would take over as leaders of this country at this point I do think the two parties that have been in control need to know that as Australians we arent complaicent. I like to believe that most Australians are intelligent enough to see what is happening in this country.
I like Muggaz's idea of forming a new party.

I read an article in the age - and there is a 5% increase on the voting population of Australia this upcoming election, and the problem with all these young voters, is that they have no idea who to vote for - they agree with some policies from either party, and not others!
The sad truth is, if Labor do win, they are actually proposing an increase in defense spending
Here is an Idea for Johnny - dont belittle our neighbours, and we will have no reason to defend ourselves from them!!!
BAM!!!

Yeah but muggaz doesn't have any policys besides just vote for me because I say I'm better - we discussed this on another blog months ago.
In Queensland the Greens preferences went to Labor - I voted for Peter Beattie -- As I said to Muggaz yesterday - I vote by gut -- who I like - I know very little about politics and the issues so I vote for who I like as a person and so yeah
What happens to preferences in a Federal Election??

My point is why do we need to in the first place, isnt this showing our neighbours that we dont trust them and we need to protect ourselves from them? Shouldnt it be that we need to work together and end the need for protection? It's an us and them mentality that I think we need to get over. Then we might be able to start working out the problems we have in this world.
Hello, we live on one planet, we are one race of Humanity. It will only take one big rock from out there to wipe us all out. Just one. It aint gonna discriminate.

What happens to preferences in a Federal Election??
If you ever get the chance to be a part of the counting of the votes Trina jump on it. It will open your eyes up to the shambles that goes on when counting happens. One thing I do know is you really need to number every box if you want your vote to count the way you want it to and to clearly mark the numbers, otherwise it can get so petty that a number 1 could look like a 7.Yeah it is that petty when it comes to preferences.

I think we have to worry more about the right wing christian fundamentalists right here in our own country.

What happens to preferences in a Federal Election??
the way i understand it is that if you vote
2 Labor
4 Liberal
1 Greens
3 Democrat
5 Independent
.... or whatever, what they do is they count all the 1st preference votes first. then because you voted green and they're obviously not going to win, all the first preference green votes are redistributed based on their second preferences. so your vote then goes to labor (but if someone else voted 2 Liberal, their vote would go to the Libs). so it's still your choice, it's not like the greens say "oh, give all our votes to labor". then it keeps going like that until they work out who the winner is.... for that seat. then they look at all the seats in australia, the party with the most seats become the government and everyone else is the opposition and within the opposition the party with the most seats runs the opposition.
i think that's right, please correct me if i'm wrong.

hypocritical isn't it? and how are our pacific neighbours meant to react to that? of course they're going to feel like they're threatened by us and want to arm themselves so they can protect themselves. it's idealistic i know, but if no one had weapons no one else would need them. "regionally supreme" countries included. who said we were allowed to make the rules?

Yeah from observation while it is happening in the counting. I cannot stress enough though how important it is to make the numbers clearly visible. Sounds dumb but it is the way it works.
hypocritical isn't it?
Exactly! So India is condemned for testing, so is Pakistan. Korea is seen as an axis of evil, France is condemned for testing and having them, Yet we are allowed to? Does this make sense? Does it mean that our government is more responsible? Who is to say that in the future we wont get some mad man ( like we have today) who wouldnt use these weapons against our neighbours (arent we supposed to live in peace with neighbours? they are neighbours not enemies..
note: Howard is supposedly espousing from his vile mouth that we should be living upto Christian values one of which is Love thy Neighbour
.). Who are we protecting ourselves from? Are we protecting ourselves from ourselves? Who gives the right to one country and not the other?
