for the footy ignoramous..

Tonight here in Australia we have the footy match called "state of origin" where queensland is up against nsw in a head to head battle of rugby league.

Before the game starts they all stand up to sing the Australian National Anthem.

Well.. this reminds me of when I was in the USA where everyone would stand and place their hand on their hearts and sing their anthm with pride.

Not here,

For those blockheads who dont know it, well Ill post the words for you..

Australians all let us rejoice
For we are young and free
We've golden soil and wealth for toil,
Our home is girt by sea:
Our land abounds in nature's gifts
Of beauty rich and rare,
In history's page let every stage
Advance Australia fair,
In joyful strains then let us sing
Advance Australia fair.

Beneath our radiant Southern Cross,
We'll toil with hearts and hands,
To make this Commonwealth of ours
Renowned of all the lands,
For those who've come across the seas
We've boundless plains to share,
With courage let us all combine
To advance Australia fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia fair.

Maybe we as Australians should be proud of our country and understand its heritage a little more.

Well, they probably did place their hand over their heart.  And they did it with pride.  But most Americans dont know the words to their anthem either! They just lip synched it!

And I still say the music sucks on the Star Spangled Banner.

Thanks phoenixboi, I've never given a thought to any national anthems apart from USA and Canada (the Canadian one is beautiful)...but now I think Australia's anthem is more beautiful and heartfelt than any other. Australians ought to learn it and sing it with pride! I know I would. Maybe I will hehe.

btw I know all seven verses of USA's anthem by heart. No, wait, I know four of them...the other three I dunno. Our anthem isn't nearly as timeless as Australia's. Our anthem holds little meaning nowadays in our modern rush-rush ungrateful society.

And no, I didnt google the thing.

You would have broke it if you had, as that was way off key!

Ok, so what are verse 2,3 and 4?

Thats what they do here.. lip synch.. but you know when your on national television and people are watching and your supposed to be "leaders" in the community it really doesnt look good when your not even lip synching.. just standing there.. or if you are lip synching your saying the wrong words!

but now I think Australia's anthem is more beautiful and heartfelt than any other. Australians ought to learn it and sing it with pride! I know I would. Maybe I will hehe.

Yeah it is nice.. I wouldnt say beautiful though, but it is part of what we should be doing as part of our heritage and national pride

Ahem....

LW that sounded beautiful!

Ok, so what are verse 2,3 and 4?

2nd, 3rd and 4th:

I knew the 1st and 4th by heart:

On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines on the stream:
'Tis the star-spangled banner! O long may it wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion
A home and a country should leave us no more?
Their blood has wiped out their foul footstep's pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved homes and the war's desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heaven-rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: "In God is our trust."
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

Beautiful words Pheonixboi!!

I have nothing against the people who lip sinc their national anthems, I'd rather them sing, but standing with their hand over their heart (or equivalent local custom) goes far to show the respect intended.

What hurts is when I see (and hear) people either ignoring the anthem, or worse yet, mocking it just for a cheap laugh from their friends.

Until now, I didn't know the words to the Australian National Anthem.. Thank you! Does it have a title other than "Australian National Anthem?

Sometimes I wonder if anyone knows the words to the Canadian National Anthem. Or is it just....

O Canada... La La La La La Laaaaa Laaaa? ;~D
